About Us

It Started With One Hive
HONEYBEE was never supposed to become a business.
It started with a garden.
I wanted a beehive to help with pollination, and my wife suggested that before bringing thousands of bees home, I should probably learn what I was getting into. So I signed up for a local beekeeping course.
I think she was hoping the class would convince me that keeping bees was too much work.
It did exactly the opposite.
I was hooked.
What began with the idea of keeping a single hive quickly became a fascination with the bees themselves—the way a colony works together, the relationship between the bees and the land around them, and the amount of knowledge, patience, and work required to keep them healthy.
One hive became more. Then more again.
Eventually, beekeeping became far more than a hobby.
Learning From the Bees
There is something humbling about working with honeybees.
You can give them good equipment, carefully manage their colonies, watch the weather, study the blooms, and make every decision you think is right—but the bees and the seasons still have the final word.
Beekeeping teaches patience.
It teaches you to pay attention.
And it teaches you very quickly that there are no shortcuts to doing the job well.
That philosophy became the foundation of HONEYBEE.
We believe in caring for our colonies responsibly, respecting the resources the bees depend on, making thoughtful use of what the hive produces, and creating products we are proud to put our name on.
For us, sustainability isn't a slogan printed on a jar. It is understanding that our livelihood depends on healthy bees, healthy forage, and an environment capable of supporting both.
Taking care of those things isn't separate from our business.
It is the business.
Built by Hand
Beekeeping has a beautiful side, but it isn't easy work.
It is lifting heavy boxes in the North Carolina heat. It is checking colonies when you'd rather be somewhere cool. It is catching swarms, repairing equipment, building boxes, watching the weather, managing pests, harvesting honey, cleaning, bottling, labeling, delivering orders, and then getting up and doing it again.
And we wouldn't trade it.
HONEYBEE has been built one hive, one harvest, and one customer at a time.
We remain a small, independent beekeeping business in Washington, North Carolina. The person behind the business is also the person working the bees, harvesting the honey, developing the products, and standing behind what we sell.
That matters to us.
Because when someone brings a jar of our honey into their home, we want them to know where it came from and who is responsible for it.

More Than Honey
One of the unexpected gifts of becoming a beekeeper was discovering the beekeeping community around us.
Experienced beekeepers helped me when I was learning. Over time, I had the opportunity to return that favor by helping new beekeepers, mentoring others, participating in our local beekeeping community, and even teaching the same kind of beekeeping course that helped start this entire journey.
Beekeepers understand something the bees demonstrate every day:
We do better when we work together.
That sense of community has stayed at the heart of HONEYBEE as the business has grown.
So has the curiosity that started it all.
What began with raw honey has grown into different varieties, infused and creamed honeys, and other products inspired by the hive. We are always experimenting, learning, and finding new ways to share what honeybees produce without losing sight of where everything began.
Honey Should Have a Sense of Place
Real honey isn't manufactured to be identical from one season to the next.
The flowers change. The weather changes. The rainfall changes. The bees forage in different places, and each harvest carries a little bit of that season with it.
Color can change.
Flavor can change.
That's not a flaw.
That's agriculture.
When you buy honey from a beekeeper, there is a story behind the jar—a landscape, a season, millions of flowers, thousands of bees, and countless hours of work that most people will never see.
We think that story is worth preserving.

Why Your Support Matters
There are easier ways to buy honey.
We know that.
But when you choose HONEYBEE, you are choosing something different.
You are supporting a local family business. You are supporting the continued care of our honeybee colonies. You are helping us invest in better equipment, healthier bees, new products, and the next harvest.
Most importantly, you are allowing a small business built from genuine passion and a lot of hard work to keep growing.
We don't expect someone to support us simply because we're small.
We want to earn that support by making products worth coming back for.
That's the standard we try to carry into everything with the HONEYBEE name on it.
And to think, it all started because I wanted one beehive beside the garden.
